Cricket SA Awards
Jaques Kallis was crowned SA’s Cricketer of the Year in a glitzy award ceremony, held at Gallagher Estate on Tuesday 7 June 2011. Sound Stylists provided the full technical for the celebrations, which honoured the achievements of both players and administrators in domestic, amateur and professional cricket levels.
The backdrop for the flowing super-wide set comprised of two 8 x 4.5m truss screens. Between the two screens was plasma forest comprising of 18 x 40” and 50” LCD Screens mounted on truss totems. This vista was gently framed by three tapering overhead flats, which were clamped on to angled trusses. The curves spanned a massive 28m, 26m and 24m respectively and gently eased the eye to stage center point. The side trusses for the spans were angled at a gentle 30° and fitted into custom support bases. The main stage was flanked by two 16 x 12ft screens, one of which was fed live visuals of the evening’s events.
The AV for the event was run on the 360 systems HD image server. Its easy to use interface and drag-and-drop editing was a perfect solution for the multitude of screens on display. With its capability of playing up to four high-definition video streams at once, this unit proved its worth in a growing HD environment. The editing and compositing was completed on the ScreenPRO-II HD, where the effects, wipes, dissolves and transitions were added. The rear stage screens were fed by 2 x Barco HD20 on separate outputs, while the outer two screens were fed from 2 x16k Barco projectors.
The PA system comprised of 8 x Coda LA8’s flown each side of the stage. These were supported by 4 x LA subs on the floor each side, and powered by 6 x Camco V8’s. At FOH the sound mixes were controlled using a Yamaha M7.
AT FOH, the lighting rig was run on a Full Boar Road Hog. “It was important to create a visual spectacular as well as depth and clarity for the cameras”, says Sean Crawley, “which would not have been possible without our full range of Robe fixtures”. Some 16 x Robe Colourspots 700, 12 x Robe Colourwash 700, and 12 x Robe 2500 Colourwashes were used for beam work and washes over the stage and audience. These were supported by 8 x Robe cityscapes which uplit the totem trusses and sides of the stage. Complimenting these were 108 x powerbanks, used as base lights throughout the venue. These units, in conjunction with various other fresnels and parcans helped enhance the clarity and rich vibrant colours.
All the technical elements combined with energetic performances by Simphiwe Dana, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels as well as The Muses, created a most memorable event for all. On behalf of Sound Stylists we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the 2011 CSA award winners on their incredible achievements.
